When I first read Lena Dunham’s rape allegation excerpted from her “memoir” I was not surprised but I was confused. As a rather bold claim, one that could easily be investigated leading to charges being filed against the mustachioed Republican named Barry. Is it not curious that Dunham, activist extraordinaire, would have declined to seek “justice” and have this predator charged and removed from society? Clearly, timidity and shame are not operative factors for Dunham as evidenced by her numerous revealing and strange nude photos. Oberlin has a student body of 2900 – ferreting out a mustachioed Republican student named Barry could probably be done in one afternoon. The statute of limitations in Ohio is twenty years therefor this rapist, who statistically speaking has committed many, many more sexual assaults, could and should go to jail.
But will Oberlin spend an afternoon seeking justice ? What would it take? And what, heaven forbid, if they spend time and effort and money, of course, to find Barry, and they determine there was no Barry at Oberlin? Will the administration at Oberlin out their acclaimed graduate Dunham as a liar? Will they seek to repair their tarnished reputation as a place where women are assaulted? This is the part that interests me because it reveals not only the loose and limited thinking of Lena Dunham but the editors of her book who, logically speaking when publishing a “memoir, should have investigated the authenticity of this claim. Oberlin police department’s Lt. Mike McCloskey has said they will take no action unless Dunham files charges. It seems Dunham, as a campus sexual assault activist, thinks inaction is the role of the activist. Hence the uselessness of activists.
My opinion, of course, is that Dunham, the fictional writer of HBO’s “Girls”, has made the whole thing up or exaggerated the episode to insinuate that Republicans have, are and will wage war on women on college campuses and elsewhere. This was her single objective in including the mustachioed Republican named Barry in her “memoir”. Whipping women into a frenzy over campus sexual abuse at the hands of conservatives who, categorically speaking hate women, is her hearts delight. And it is the go to issue Democrats use to woo female voters. Sadly, this accusation is her best option as an explanation of her motives because if she were raped and she took no action and Barry continues to rape and assault women is she herself not to blame?
